Despite Bari struggling throughout the campaign and eventually being relegated from Serie A, Protti delivered one of the most remarkable individual seasons in Italian football history. He finished the season as Serie A top scorer with 24 goals, sharing the Capocannoniere title with Giuseppe Signori.
