Opening night at the Stade de France, tartan-jacquard Umbro kits under the lights, Craig Brown’s side went toe-to-toe with champions Brazil: John Collins buried a penalty for 1–1 before a late Tom Boyd own goal made it 1–2. They scrapped a 1–1 with Norway (Craig Burley leveling after Håvard Flo), still alive heading into Saint-Étienne. Then Morocco hit like a cold wave: 0–3, Burley sent off, dream gone. Colin Hendry’s armband, Jim Leighton’s gloves, hard yards with little glory — the classic Scotland arc: valiant, near enough to taste it, one step short.
